Our Favorite Toddler / Pre-school Aged Children Toys

I’ve written a blog post all about the importance of play—if you haven’t read it, you can check it out here!

When we consider childhood development, one of the most crucial factors is the impact of play. Today, us parents are surrounded by an abundance of children’s toys everywhere we look. So, I’d love to help make those choices easier for you, both from a mama's perspective and a childhood development perspective. Each toy that I purchase for my daughters are carefully chosen to align with their developmental needs and my own personal philosophy. I have such a strong belief in intentionally choosing what surrounds your child in these primary years, and toys are one of the most important.

*Disclaimer: my absolute favourite toy is 100% free—and readily available to every parent on the planet… that toy being Nature. Twigs, rocks, leaves, grainy sand, and everything in between that Mother Nature so graciously provides to us. So, if you feel like these toys below are out of reach or unobtainable for you and your family, I promise, you can find everything and more once you open that door and take a step outside.*

Wooden Toys/Montessori Design:

If I had to choose just one type of toy, it would have to be our wooden toys. Their open-ended, simple, and beautiful design, along with their quality, sets them apart from any other toy out there. No flashy, overstimulating lights or loud sounds, and most importantly, no harm to our environment—wooden toys offer everything and more that your kiddo needs to learn, enhance their skills, engage, and have fun!

We have been and continue to be obsessed with everything GRIMMS, (which you can find at The Education Station) but we also absolutely cherish our locally handcrafted wooden toys. Our Canadian friend over at The Playful Peacock is our go-to.

Reading:

As much as my girls love being read to, there’s nothing I love more than reading to them. Cozying up with our favorite books is something I’ll always cherish and love about being a mama. I get to hold their tiny toes and also transport them to a different world for a few minutes. Books are like magic portals that invite kiddos to step outside themselves and connect with others in such a beautiful way. They teach life lessons in a manner that makes learning about our world special and easy. They offer diverse perspectives and teach empathy and compassion, all while being fun, engaging, and so mindful.

Dress Up and Roll-Play Toys:

No matter what toy my girls are playing with, you are guaranteed to find them in their princess, fairy, or butterfly dresses. Dress-up and role-playing are their favorite things in the world right now. And honestly, mine too. Watching them transform into beautiful fairy princesses, hosting tea parties, and making cupcakes in their pretend kitchen is more enjoyable for me than it is for them! Dress-up and role-play are where imagination thrives best. It’s where their tiny personalities truly come alive. And socially, it’s an incredible and natural tool to use!

Arts:

If my oldest is ever too quiet, I know exactly where to find her. Her wooden easel from Crate and Barrel is one of the best investments I’ve ever made. I’m blown away by her creativity on a daily basis. She’s discovering her own sense of self through her art, and it’s really amazing to see. Whether it's coloring, crafting, or painting, my girls love it all.

One of my favourite things about art is how it acts as one of the best therapeutic tools professionals use when working with children. It helps them deal with their emotions and experiences in a safe and encouraging way. My go to calm down tool with my girls is our art cart.

Puzzles:

I love a good toy that really works the brain. Puzzles help with coordination, dexterity, and teach spatial relationships. They also enhance your child's memory and concentration skills while providing opportunities within challenges. It's a great way to connect with your little and, of course, to have some fun.

Sensory / Fine Motor Play:

Sensory play isn't just tons of fun; it's also incredible for boosting your child's fine motor skills. Engaging in tactile activities works wonders for their developing brain. Plus, it's so easy to set up and guarantees hours of exploration and hot coffee drinking time.

If you’ve gotten this far, I hope this helps you in one way or another. These toys are probably some of the simplest and easiest tools out there to help make your kiddos childhood so conducive and enjoyable. Now, go have some fun with your little joys.

Thank you so much for reading.
